This Bulletin was published in 1985 [39] and presents a summary of the results of parametric three-dimensional analyses of 45 degree lateral connections with various d/D, D/T, and t/T values and subjected to internal pressure and external in-plane moment loading on the branch (nozzle) and the run pipe (vessel). The main objective of this parametric study, sponsored by the subcommittees on Reinforced Openings and External Loads (ROEL) and Piping, Pumps and Valves (PP&V) of the Pressure Vessel Research Committee (PVRC) is to develop and recommend to ASME a set of stress indices for the structural integrity evaluation of 45 degree branch connections which are found in nuclear, fossil and petrochemical installations. The parametric studies began in 1978, and the last of the four model studies was completed in May 1982. Careful consideration was given to the selection of lateral configurations to see that they covered a broad range of practical applications. Based on an extensive exploratory study, finite element method was selected as the tool for the parametric evaluation.
