This guideline deals with plants for the production of acrylonitrile (AN) and of acrylonitrile polymers or copolymers including the production of fibres. The present guideline does not cover the processing of acrylonitrile polymers or acrylonitrile copolymers to semi-finished or finished products and the manufacture of derivates of acrylonitrile. Acrylonitrile is produced by conversion of propylene, ammonia and air in the gaseous phase on appropriate fluidized bed catalysts. The processes to produce fibres from acrylonitril polymers as well as dispersions by emulsion polymerisation of AN are described in detail.During production of acrylonitrile and its polymers, emissions of acrylonitrile and other volatile organic compounds such as butadiene, styrene, vinyl acetate as well as – after drying processes – product dusts arise. The measures to reduce stationary source and diffuse emissions of AN-plants and to observe the emission values for emission control are treated in particular. The thermal treatment of waste gases in appropriate power plants is typical for recent AN-plants, a procedure which is usually applied to all chemical of a production site. Condensation, adsorption and absorption are further possibilities for treatment of the waste gases. These methods are usually applied if high AN contents are present in the waste gas.Two sections deal with waste and waste water treatment. The final chapter is a measurement guide which ensures that results from emission measurements from AN plants are representative and comparable.
