Specifies requirements for single-component, general purpose priming paints as part of a system for the protection of iron and steel against atmospheric corrosion.

Scope

This Standard sets out requirements for single-component, general purpose priming paints as part of a system for the protection of iron and steel against atmospheric corrosion. They are intended to be applied as supplied by brush, roller or spray to provide resistance to weathering, washing and intermittent contact with petrol or mineral oils. The Standard deals with primers that are surface dry within 6 h and may be overcoated after 16 h.
This Standard applies to paints intended for the priming of well-cleaned steel surfaces. These products should be overcoated with a paint system specified by AS/NZS 2312 such as ALK5 or ALK6.
The primer is intended as a first coat on steel, under alkyd topcoats such as Types C17 and C20 paints, as specified in AS/NZS 2312.
NOTES:
1 Solvent-borne primers as described in this Standard comply with the requirements of Types C04 and C05 paint, in accordance with AS/NZS 2312.
2 Appendix A provides recommendations on information which should be provided by the purchaser at the time of enquiry or order.
3 Additional information on the use and application of steel primers is given in Appendix B.
