The distinctive nature of<br \/>\nthe CDPD Network lies primarily in the ability to provide this data<br \/>\nconnectivity to mobile users. The Mobile End System (M-ES) may<br \/>\ntherefore change its subnetwork point of attachment at will. The<br \/>\nCDPD Network thus provides the service of managing the mobile data<br \/>\nconnectivity of its subscribers.<\/p>\n<p>The MD-IS has the primary responsibility for providing this<br \/>\nmobile data connectivity management. Within the MD-IS, the Mobility<br \/>\nManagement function is defined as follows:<\/p>\n<p>a. Mobile Home Function (MHF)<\/p>\n<p>b. Mobile Serving Function (MSF).<\/p>\n<p>The MD-IS participates in the provision of the CDPD Network<br \/>\nsupport services. The support services involving the MD-IS<br \/>\ninclude:<\/p>\n<p>a. Network Management Services<\/p>\n<p>b. Accounting Services<\/p>\n<p>c. Multicast Service<\/p>\n<p>d. Broadcast Service<\/p>\n<p>e. Subscriber Authentication and Authorization Service<\/p>\n<p>f. Subscriber Location Service<\/p>\n<p>g. Airlink Encryption Service<\/p>\n<p>h. Compression Service.<\/p>\n<p>The following sections describe the MD-IS role within each of<br \/>\nthe functions and services.
