Keep fire fighters fit with the 2015 NFPA 1583: Standard on Health-Related Fitness Programs for Fire Department Members. Fire fighter fitness affects every aspect of the job, from effectiveness in the field to long-term stress and injury resilience. That’s why a fitness program — with properly trained peer fitness trainers and health and fitness coordinators — is a key component of any department’s occupational safety and health program. NFPA 1583 outlines a complete health-related fitness program designed for fire departments that is consistent with today’s best practices. The 2015 edition is a vital companion to NFPA 1582: Comprehensive Occupational Medical Program for Fire Departments. Important revisions in the 2015 NFPA 1583 keep the Standard current with all other NFPA\u00ae health and safety standards. Annex material helps fire departments provide an adequate facility, rather than a prescriptive list of equipment. Annexes contain a suggestion that the HFC have a background in functional anatomy, exercise physiology, exercise testing and prescription, exercise supervision, and leadership. There’s also a self-assessment tool for use by members to monitor their individual fitness level.
